  1. Cambodian political leader, prime minister
  2. from 1985. Originally a member of the Khmer
  3. Rouge army, he defected in 1977 to join
  4. Vietnam-based anti-Khmer Cambodian forces.
  5. Born into a poor peasant family in the
  6. eastern province of Kampang-Cham, Hun Sen
  7. joined the Khmer Rouge in 1970. He rose to
  8. become a regiment commander, but,
  9. disillusioned, defected to the anti-Khmer
  10. Cambodian forces in 1977. On his return to
  11. Cambodia, following the Vietnamese-backed
  12. communist takeover, he served as foreign
  13. minister 1979, and then as prime minister
  14. 1985, promoting economic liberalization and a
  15. thawing in relations with exiled, non-Khmer,
  16. opposition forces as a prelude to a
  17. compromise political settlement.
